Prawn Sizes Explained: Small, Medium, Large, Jumbo and Tiger

Prawns are sold by size, and the size changes how you cook them. Here is a simple guide.

Small and mini prawns

These cook quickly and are good for biryani, pulao, rice dishes and masala.

Medium prawns

A good everyday size for karahi, curry and stir fry.

Large and jumbo prawns

These are meaty and hold their shape, so they suit frying, grilling and special dinners.

Tiger prawns

Tiger prawns are the biggest, and they make a strong main dish for grilling or butter garlic recipes.

How to order: whole or peeled?

You can order prawns whole, headless with the tail on, or peeled and deveined, depending on the product. Peeled prawns save time in the kitchen, while whole prawns give a stronger flavour in curries and stocks.

Tip

Pick the size that fits your recipe, not just the biggest one. Small prawns work best in rice dishes, and large prawns work best when the prawn is the star of the plate.
